Shelters are overflowing with wonderful, loving pets that desperately need to find forever homes. However, some of them have a very hard time getting adopted. Senior dogs and cats, for instance, are often passed over in favor of puppies and kittens. This is very sad, because there are some great benefits to adopting older pets. They’re calmer, less destructive, and are usually much more interested in collecting ear scritches than in making mischief. Black dogs and cats also have a hard time getting adopted, in large part due to old myths. Pets with hearing or vision issues often spend months in shelters as well.
Don’t Make Assumptions
Many people overlook pets with handicaps because they think that they will need lots of extra care. Concerns over expenses are another common assumption. However, you may find that many less adoptable pets just need a little extra TLC. You may not even notice any additional costs! Don’t be afraid to ask the shelter staff about the pet’s care needs. In some cases, you may even be able to get discounts on adoption fees.
A Rewarding Experience
Giving that one special pet a new lease on life is a very beautiful and fulfilling experience. Many less-adoptable pets are full of love, and just want someone to care for them and play with them. You may also be surprised at how resilient our animal companions are. Pets don’t feel the emotional impact from medical challenges they may face: just like any other pet, they just want to be loved. It’s a wonderful thing to watch a sad, lonely pet blossom and thrive with good care!
