Signs of Sickness in Cats

Kitties are quite enigmatic little furballs, but they do have a way of getting their points across when they need to. Fluffy is probably pretty clear when she wants to let you know that she wants dinner Right Meow, or is ready to cuddle. However, cats are much more secretive about letting on that they’re sick. In fact, they often try to hide signs of sickness. A Dunn, NC vet lists some things to watch for below.

Hiding

Kitties are all unique, so some are naturally more outgoing than others. However, if Fluffy doesn’t feel well, she may withdraw to an isolated hiding spot.

Poor Grooming

Generally, cats are very diligent about grooming themselves. If Fluffy’s coat starts looking thin, greasy, matted, or unkempt, you may have a sick kitty on your hands.

Vomiting/Diarrhea

An occasional upset tummy may not be an emergency, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Contact your vet if your pet isn’t digesting her food properly. It’s also worth mentioning that while hairballs are somewhat par for the course with cats, if Fluffy is producing a lot of them, or is dry-heaving or vomiting excessively, there may be something going on with her.

Reduced Appetite

There is a disclaimer on this one, as some cats are rather finicky. However, if Fluffy simply dislikes her food, she’ll probably meow to demand something different. If she has little or no interest in eating, she may be ill. Changes in water consumption are also a warning sign.

Weight Gain/Loss

Health problems can cause cats to lose or gain weight. Sudden and/or drastic changes in your kitty’s weight can be a red flag.

Changes In Purrsonality

Subtle changes in the way kitties act or vocalize can also be indicative of medical issues. If Fluffy is usually aloof, but suddenly starts crying for attention, she may be sick. A quiet cat that begins yowling incessantly could also be ill.

Respiratory Issues

Coughing, sneezing, and wheezing can be signs of serious illnesses in cats. You may also notice discharge from Fluffy’s nose or mouth.

Other Symptoms

These are just a few common signs of illness in kitties. Fever, trembling, lethargy, and litterbox issues are also warning signs. If you see any of these symptoms in your pet, call your vet immediately.
